In 1975, Cliff Tait delivered the first CT-4A Airtrainer to the Royal Australian Air Force. Fifty years later, the CT-4 remains a fixture in Australian skies. No longer operated by the RAAF, the CT-4s in Australian skies are privately owned, and are a highly desirable and much-loved, nimble, aerobatic aircraft.
The Airtourer Association is celebrating the 50 years' of CT-4 operation in Australia at their annual President's Fly-in in October at Tamworth. The Airtourer is, of course, the progenitor of the Airtrainer, and along with the Aircruiser, completes the Airtourer family of aircraft.
The Airtourer Association was formed in 1977 with the objective of obtaining spare parts and technical information at a reasonable cost to help keep Airtourers in the air.
The first official Fly-In and General Meeting was held at Griffith in 1978. The aim of the Association was formally adopted, and with the arrival of CT-4 Airtrainers on the civil register, evolved to be:
The CT-4 Airtrainer is derived from the Victa Aircruiser and is warmly welcomed as part of the Airtourer family of aircraft.
The Association holds two major events every year: the Airtourer Convention and AGM, and the President's Fly-in. Early President's Fly-ins were held at the long-time President Sonny Rankin's property at Yarrandale in NSW, and at its peak, attracted scores of Airtourers and a few RAAF CT-4s (and even Army Porters and Nomads).
Tamworth was chosen as an appropriate venue for the 2025 Fly-in, as the home of a large fleet of CT-4B aircraft for almost three decades.
You don't need to be a member of the Association to register for the Fly-in, but we hope you’ll have such a great time that you’ll want to sign up!
The Airtourer Association President cordially invites all CT-4 Airtrainer, Airtourer, the (only) Aircruiser, owners, operators, maintainers, Association members, and the most enthused of enthusiasts to get together at Tamworth from 17-19 October for a weekend of activities and festivities to celebrate 50 years of CT-4 operation in Australia.

Don ‘McZero’ McNaught
‘60 great years of flying Airtourers, Aircruiser, and CT-4s’
Born and raised in rural Victoria, Don’s aviation adventures began with a private pilot’s license and being called up for National Service at age 20. Don served in Singapore, Malaysia and as an Infantry Platoon Commander in Vietnam before a twenty-year military career took flight - including at No. 1 Flight Training School, Point Cook, and as an instructor at East Sale. Don has flown just about everything cool, from Airtourers to CT-4’s, Winjeels, helicopters, jets, hang-gliders, gliders, ultralights and the one and only Aircruiser. After a seven-year stint as a senior instructor in Saudi Arabia, he returned to a unique triple life: a flight screening instructor, an operational Army pilot, and a commercial helicopter pilot for SeaWorld. Now retired on the Gold Coast, he enjoys flying recreational aircraft.

As well as the annual Convention and the President's Fly-ins, the Airtourer Association hosts a number of other social and flying events. There is a mid-year and end-of-year lunch in Victoria, and a now annual Formation Camp in Yarrawonga in November. The Association also has ground displays at the Avalon Airshow, and participates in other airshows including AusFly (where Andrew Temby displayed VH-FVV in a beautiful aerobatic sequence).
Check out a video of the Aircruiser in flight from our 2024 President's Fly-in to Goondiwindi.
The Association also publishes the Airtourer Association Newsletter six times per year, and has a discounted insurance arrangement for members through Agile.
